02 · The Session

What You'll Cover

Brush Basics is a complete introduction to the miniature painting hobby — from unpacking a sprue to holding a finished, painted model. In two hours, you'll go through every stage of the process alongside an Arcane Forge instructor.

Building the Model
We start from the sprue — cutting out the pieces cleanly, removing mould lines, and assembling the model with plastic glue. Tools covered: clippers, hobby knife, plastic glue. We'll explain why each step matters and what to watch out for.

Priming
Every painted miniature starts with a primer coat — the foundation that makes paint stick and deepens contrast. We'll explain the difference between spray and brush-on primers, which colours to use for which styles, and apply a primer to your model together.

Basecoating
The first colour layer — giving your model a solid, consistent base to build from. We'll cover how to thin paint correctly, brush control, and coverage. You'll basecoat your model's main areas and learn why thinning matters more than most beginners expect.

Washes
The technique that makes a model look painted. A wash flows into the recesses of a model, creating shadow and depth instantly. One wash can transform a flat basecoat into something that looks genuinely finished. We'll apply one together and let you see the before and after.

Highlights
The finishing touch — lighter paint on raised areas to create contrast and make the model pop. We'll cover drybrushing and edge highlighting, which are the two most accessible techniques for beginners, and apply at least one to your model before the session ends.

You'll leave with a painted model. It doesn't need to be perfect — the point is that you've been through every stage of the process and know exactly what to do next time. Most people are surprised by what they produce in two hours.
