What Is a One-Shot?

A one-shot is a complete D&D adventure that starts and finishes in a single sitting. There is no session two. Nothing carries over, nothing is left hanging, and nobody has to find a free Tuesday every fortnight for the next eight months.

You sit down at noon as a stranger with a character sheet you've never seen. By five o'clock you've argued with a dragon, betrayed a friend, or died heroically in a corridor — and the story is finished.

It's the best possible way to find out whether D&D is for you. It's also, quietly, the best way for people who already love D&D to play something they'd never risk in a long campaign.

🎭
Characters Provided
Pre-made sheets, ready to play. Pick the one that appeals and we'll walk you through what the numbers mean.
📖
No Homework
Nothing to read, buy or memorise beforehand. Turn up and play.
⚔️
The Mini Is Yours
Every player goes home with the miniature of the character they played. No extra charge.
🎲
Dice at the Table
We have sets to lend. Bring your own if you've got them — and if you haven't, we sell rather a lot of them.
🤝
Come Alone
Most people do. You'll have a party by the end of the first scene — that's rather the point.
Section Three

Never Played Before?

Then this is the day for you, and we mean that sincerely rather than as marketing.

Our DM teaches the rules at the table, as you play — not in a lecture beforehand. You don't need to know what a saving throw is. You don't need to have watched anything, read anything or played anything. You will be told when to roll and what the number means.

The only thing we ask is that you turn up ready to say yes to things. D&D rewards people who commit to a daft idea, and five hours goes very quickly when everyone at the table is enjoying themselves.

A fair warning
Your character may well die
One-shots are written to be dangerous — there's no next session in which to recover, so the stakes are real from the first roll. This is a feature. Some of the best stories we've had at the Forge ended badly for everyone involved.
Section Four

Take Your Character Home

Here's the part we're most pleased about. You won't just play a character for an afternoon — you'll leave with them.

Every player at the table gets the miniature representing the character they played, included in the price of the ticket. The rogue you improvised a terrible accent for, the cleric who made one genuinely heroic decision at the worst possible moment: that's a physical object on your shelf now, not just a memory.

It also means that if the hobby grabs you — and it does grab people — you already own your first miniature. Bring it back to a Brush Basics session and we'll teach you to paint it.

Worth knowing
Unpainted, and that's the point
Miniatures are supplied bare. That's deliberate — painting your own first model is half the fun, and we'd rather hand you the start of something than a finished souvenir. Paints, brushes and advice are all available at the counter.
Section Five

What to Bring

Honestly? Yourself. Everything below is optional, and we can cover all of it on the day.

Nice to have, not required
  • A set of polyhedral dice
  • A pencil
  • Water or a drink
  • Snacks for the table
  • An appetite for trouble
  • Nothing else at all

The café is open throughout, so there's coffee and something to eat without leaving the building. Five hours is a long stretch — we'll break in the middle.
