01 · The Workshop

What This Is About

All skill levels welcome

The Painter's Forge is a hands-on painting workshop focused on one question: how do you get strong results without spending 35 hours on a single model?

This isn't a speed-painting class. It's about understanding why paint behaves the way it does — value, chroma, hue, dilution, ink behaviour — and then using that understanding to make deliberate choices about where effort pays off.

We'll run technical exercises on paper and plasticard, then apply everything to a Games Workshop Blue Horror — painting it to Tabletop+ standard: clean, readable from 50–100 cm, eye-catching, and finished in a sensible amount of time rather than fussed over indefinitely.

Meet Bertrand Dubaut

This workshop is led by Bertrand Dubaut — a miniature painter whose work focuses on exactly the philosophy this session is built around: strong, deliberate results without unnecessary hours lost to perfectionism.

03 · What You'll Learn

Skills & Techniques

The session is built around practical exercises before a single brush touches the model. By the time you sit down with the Blue Horror, you'll already know why you're making each choice.

🎨
Colour Theory
Value, chroma, hue — the three properties that control what paint actually does on a surface. Understanding these is the difference between mixing muddy colours and mixing clean ones.
💧
Acrylics vs Inks
What makes a paint opaque or transparent. How inks behave differently and when to use each. How dilution changes both.
🖌️
Brush Control
Loading the brush correctly. Basecoats, refinement, pushing paint without losing control. A sharp tip matters more than anything else.
👁️
Reading the Model
How to analyse a miniature before you paint it — identifying what matters, where to push contrast, and where you can deliberately cut corners without anyone noticing.
🌫️
Grisaille & Glazing
Spray a monochrome value map, then glaze the colour back in. One of the most efficient paths to a strong result on a coloured model.
Pushing Contrast
The final step that separates tabletop paint from something that reads well at arm's length. Where to go lighter, where to go darker, and when to stop.

The Session, Step by Step

#
Programme
1
Introduction — Understanding Colour
What makes a colour: value, chroma, hue. How acrylic paints and inks behave differently. Exercises on paper — before a brush touches a model.
2
Technique — Loading the Brush
Basecoats, dilution, refinement, pushing the paint. Exercises on plasticard so you understand the movement before committing to the model.
3
Reading the Model — the Blue Horror
Analysing the miniature before we paint it. What matters. What we can cut corners on. Where contrast will land hardest.
4
Painting the Blue Horror
Bringing it all together on the model — in five stages: Basecoats → Grisaille (airbrush or spray can) → Glazing the colour back in → Details → Pushing contrast.

Full session duration and start time announced before registration opens. Entry: €99.99 per person (incl. BTW) — model and all paints included.

05 · What to Bring

Preparation

The Blue Horror model and all paints are provided — both included in the entry fee. You take the finished model home at the end. All you need to bring are your brushes. If you don't own brushes yet, our full range is available to purchase in store on the day.

Brushes — Essential
  • Natural hair brushes only — no synthetic brushes. Synthetic bristles don't hold a tip the same way and will limit what you can do in the session.
  • Kolinsky sable is the gold standard and what we recommend — size 1, size 2, and a size 00 for details. A sharp, well-formed tip matters more than brand or price.
  • A miniature holder
  • A hairdryer (optional — speeds up drying between layers)
Extras
  • A water pot and a palette (we provide these if you don't have them)
  • Paper towel
  • Your own existing paints if you have them — bring what you own, we'll work with it
